## Backups

Another very important habit to get into is doing backups of your work. We recommend to have the original and at least **TWO** backups.

Alternative sources of backups:

* Dropbox
* Google Drive
* Microsoft OneDrive
* SETU Waterford G Drive - **ONLY** 300mbs
* External hard disk
* Email!

There are a number of ways to back up your documents and information on this section only contains a small example of how you can do this.

{% hint style="info" %}
While you are a staff member in SETU Waterford, you are entitled to use Microsoft OneDrive as a means of backup but remember once you leave here, that space will no longer be available to you, so it will be important for you to take everything off that drive to another form of storage before you leave.

Remember as well that once you leave SETU Waterford, your staff email address will no longer be available so if you do use email as one of your backup methods too also email the backup to your personal account.
{% endhint %}

#### Backup and Save Regularly

We have heard many cases where a staff member will be working on a project for several hours without saving or backing up and then lost the whole document. We would recommend that all staff begin backing up their documents every hour so that at most you'll only lose an hours worth of progress if something were to happen.

{% hint style="info" %}
Consistency here is key - even if you are rushed, take time to backup! Unfortunately not everything if recoverable when lost - unless you have a backup.
{% endhint %}

#### :exclamation:Word of warning about USB sticks/Pen Drives :exclamation:

Do **NOT** use USB Sticks (also called memory sticks or thumb drives) as your main backup. They can be easily lost and easily destroyed. Every year without fail, we have at least one person coming to us, in a distressed state because all their work (in a few cases four years' worth of work) has been lost due to a damaged USB stick.

USB sticks should only be used to transport information from one location to another.

Also do **NOT** keep all backups in one location. Again, we have had staff with damaged drives coming to us and unfortunately their backup has also been on that damaged drive. Keep your backups in separate locations for safety’s sake.
