# Student Support & Services

**\*\*\* Students Please Note:** We have added an extra layer of security to your Microsoft 365 account sign-in by implementing Multifactor Authentication (MFA). There are two ways to register for MFA: Either using your mobile device only or using both your laptop and phone. Please select your preferred registration method from the [How to Guides](broken://pages/03ForSyYXQETyDRIDvPJ) page.

## Student Accounts

You are entitled to use:

* **SETU PCs** in the open‑access areas of the LRC and in computer labs (Note: Some labs may have restricted access depending on your programme).
* **Library services**, including access to databases, journals, loan systems, and other learning resources.
* **Software tools**, such as Office 365, EndNote, NVivo, and additional applications available for download through Blackboard.

#### Your SETU Student account credentials are in the form:

***Username**:*           <Student-Number@setu.ie>

e.g. <C12345678@setu.ie>

Your **SETU** student credentials provide access to a wide range of University systems and services, including:

* SETU networked PCs
* Eduroam Wi‑Fi
* Blackboard
* Email
* OneDrive
* Print services, including top‑up facilities
* Campus printers
* Library databases and systems

Self‑service tools, such as registration, exam results, and other student administration services

## Backups

Another very important habit to get into is doing backups of your work. We recommend to have the original and at least **TWO** backups.

Alternative sources of backups:

* Dropbox
* Google Drive
* Microsoft OneDrive
* SETU Waterford G Drive - **ONLY** 300mbs
* External hard disk
* Email!

There are a number of ways to back up your documents and information on this section only contains a small example of how you can do this.

{% hint style="info" %}
While you are a student in SETU Waterford, you are entitled to use Microsoft OneDrive as a means of backup but remember once you leave here, that space will no longer be available to you, so it will be important for you to take everything off that drive to another form of storage before you leave.

Remember as well that once you leave SETU Waterford, your student email address will no longer be available so if you do use email as one of your backup methods too also email the backup to your personal account.
{% endhint %}

#### Backup and Save Regularly

We have heard many cases where a student will be working on a project for several hours without saving or backing up and then lost the whole document. We would reccommend that all students begin backing up their documents every hour so that at most you'll only lose an hours worth of progress if something were to happen.

{% hint style="info" %}
Consistency here is key - even if you are rushed, take time to backup! Unfortunately not everything if recoverable when lost - unless you have a backup.
{% endhint %}

#### :exclamation:Word of warning about USB sticks/Pen Drives :exclamation:

Do **NOT** use USB Sticks (also called memory sticks or thumb drives) as your main backup. They can be easily lost and easily destroyed. Every year without fail, we have at least one person coming to us, in a distressed state because all their work (in a few cases four years' worth of work) has been lost due to a damaged USB stick.

USB sticks should only be used to transport information from one location to another.

Also do **NOT** keep all backups in one location. Again, we have had students with damaged drives coming to us and unfortunately their backup has also been on that damaged drive. Keep your backups in separate locations for safety’s sake.

## Software for Students

As a student in SETU Waterford, you are entitled to download and use a variety of software which is provided by the TU.

#### What Software am I entitled to use from Computer Services?

* Office 365 available for download for PC's, Apples, Ipads and some phones
* SPSS - for Macs and PC's
* NVivo - for Macs and PC's
* Minitab - for Macs and PC's
* Endnote - for Macs and PC's

Microsoft Office 365 is available to all staff and students while they are current staff or current students of SETU Waterford. It can be put onto up to 5 devices including Macintoshes (Apple devices such as iBook, iPads, etc). It cannot be put onto a Chromebook – Office can only be accessed online via the web on a Chromebook, and the online applications are much more limited in their capabilities compared to the download apps. More information on Office 365 can be found on the SETU website [www.setu.ie](https://www.setu.ie/).

SPSS, Minitab and NVivo are all statistical packages, and Endnote is a referencing package. All of these packages are available for downloads by students and staff.

Minitab can ONLY be installed on a Windows machine BUT is available to use online on a Macintosh (Apple) device.

If you wish to access SPSS, NVivo, Minitab or Endnote, email [computerservices.wd@setu.ie](mailto:computerservices.wd@setu.ie) for further information.
